Medicare Open Enrollment is from October 15 through December 7 each year. This is the best time for Medicare Beneficiaries to carefully evaluate their health care needs. Beneficiaries can get free help evaluating their Medicare plans and coverage at Open Enrollment Events hosted by the Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida and SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders)
Open Enrollment Counseling sessions feature specially trained SHINE volunteer counselors who provide free, unbiased information and assistance to Medicare beneficiaries. No appointments are necessary for drop-in open enrollment sessions.
What to Bring to Open Enrollment Counseling
Please bring your Medicare card as well as information about your health and prescription drug coverage. To best evaluate your Medicare plan options, SHINE volunteers will need a list of medications taken (including dosages), a list of your preferred providers (doctors/pharmacies), and any notices you’ve received from your existing plan, Social Security, secondary insurance, or Medicare.
If possible, before your counseling visit, visit the new Medicare Plan Finder website and create an account. This will expedite the process during your open enrollment counseling session.
For more information about the Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida, check our online calendar or call the Elder Helpline toll-free at 866-413-5337.
