At the request of the Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida’s and other members of the aging network, the County Commissioners of Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Glades, Hendry, Lee and Sarasota Counties will all introduce ceremonial proclamations declaring May 2018 as Older Americans Month in their respective counties.
Here is the text of the Lee County Older Americans Month resolution:
Proclaiming May 2018 as Older Americans Month
Whereas, Lee County is home to more than 195,000 adults age 60 and over who enrich and strengthen our community; and
Whereas, The Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida is committed to engaging and supporting older adults, their families, and caregivers in Lee County and across Southwest Florida; and
Whereas, The Area Agency on Aging is celebrating its 40th year of serving our region’s elders in September of 2018; and
Whereas, Older Americans Month is led by the Administration for Community Living’s Administration on Aging, and is celebrated across the country by individuals, organizations and municipalities to improve the quality of life for older adults; and
Whereas, the 2018 theme for Older Americans Month is “Engage at Every Age,” and emphasizes the importance of being active and involved in every phase of life; and
Whereas, Lee County acknowledges the importance of taking part in activities that promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being—no matter your age; and
Whereas, the people of Lee County can enrich the lives of individuals of every age by promoting home and community based services that support independent living; involving older adults in community planning, events, and other activities; and providing opportunities for older adults to work, volunteer, learn, lead, and mentor;
Now therefore, be it resolved that the Board of County Commissioners of Lee County, Florida does hereby proclaim May 2018 to be Older Americans Month. We urge every resident to take time during this month to recognize older adults and the people who serve them as vital parts of our community.
