LEAPP HOLDS CEREMONY TO COMMEMORATE WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY: Fort Myers, Florida
On June 15, 2010 LEAPP ( Lee Elder Abuse Prevention Partnership) sponsored a gathering of concerned citizens, human service groups, law enforcement and legislators in Centennial Park in downtown Fort Myers, Florida to commemorate the World Elder Abuse Awareness initiative. Letters and proclamations from local legislators marking the day were read at the ceremony.
Each year June 15th is internationally recognized as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day with the objective to globally raise awareness of all forms of elder abuse and to move that awareness into action to free the world of abuse of our elders. Together we have the power to prevent elder abuse. Every citizen is legally responsible to report any suspicion of elder abuse to the abuse hotline: Florida toll free at 1-800-962-2873. A report will be taken by an Adult Protective Services officer and, if warranted, an investigation initiated into the alleged abuse. All calls are confidential.
The Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida, Inc. is a proud partner of LEAPP. Gail Holton, Director of Programs and Marilyn Gregory, Elder Abuse Prevention Coordinator for The Area Agency on Aging serve on the coalition’s steering committee. The coalition is made up of an array of participating agencies and leaders in Lee County including local law enforcement, human service providers and legislative leaders.
Initial funding for LEAPP was made possible through a grant awarded to the Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center on Elder Abuse and the National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse.
